London: Hollywood heartthrob Ryan Reynoldswho plays superhero Green Lantern in an upcoming film saysthat superhero movies are unrightly dismissed as mereescapism.

The 33-year-old actor who had played mutant villainDeadpool in the X-Men Origins: Wolverine believes that thethe genre too has delivered films which are "brilliant piecesof art", reported Contactmusic.

"If a superhero movie is done right, you can craft anincredible film. There have been superhero films that I thinkare brilliant pieces of art. I love Iron Man, I loveBatman. But also you have to remember it's escapistmoviemaking, we want to be captivated and taken away," saidthe actor who is married to Hollywood beauty ScarlettJohannson.

The Proposal star now hopes that his new film GreenLantern can match the success of his all time favouritesuperhero movies.

He plays Hal Jordan, a man who is bestowed superpowersby an intergalactic order known as the Green Lantern Corps sothat he can protect Earth, in the upcoming film.

"What specifically appealed to me about the GreenLantern role was the pilot character's story arc. Thecharacter is a classic action hero, and there's an arc. Here'sa guy who begins the journey very cocky and arrogant. Whenhe's bestowed this supernatural gift, he is humbled by it. Ilike that trajectory. Usually, it's the opposite way," saidReynolds.
