Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan was injured after an intruder attacked him with a knife at his Mumbai home in the early hours of Thursday, January 16, officials said.
Khan, 54, was hospitalised and required a medical procedure following the incident. Here's a lowdown on what we know so far.

What Happened At Saif's Home On January 16
- Saif Ali Khan was asleep on the 11th floor of his Bandra (West) home in Mumbai, when he woke up to suspicious sounds.
- The incident took place around 2.30 AM on Thursday.
- Saif got up and confronted the intruder, and a scuffle broke out.
- The intruder stabbed Saif six times, and fled the scene.
- The Bandra Police received a call at 3 AM.
- Saif Ali Khan's wife, actor Kareena Kapoor Khan, was out for dinner with her sister Karisma Kapoor and friends Sonam and Rhea Kapoor on Wednesday evening.
- Kareena returned home around 1.30 AM.
- In a video after the attack, Kareena was seen outside her Bandra home.
What Lilavati Hospital Said
- Saif Ali Khan was rushed to the Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai at 3.30 AM.
- Saif Ali Khan suffered six stab wounds, with one of them being dangerously close to the spine.
- Dr Niraj Uttamani, COO of Lilavati Hospital, said in a statement that Saif Ali Khan was stabbed by an unidentified person at his Bandra home and was brought in to the hospital around 3.30 AM.
- Saif Ali Khan was operated upon by a team of doctors led by neurosurgeon Dr Nitin Dange, cosmetic surgeon Dr Leena Jain, and anesthesiologist Dr Nisha Gandhi.
- "Saif Ali Khan was stabbed in the spine with a knife," said Dr Niraj Uttamani in a media briefing on Thursday afternoon.
- The team at Lilavati had to repair the leaking spinal fluid. There were two deep wounds on hands and neck, which were repaired by plastic surgery.
- Saif underwent a 2.5-hour neurosurgery at Lilavati Hospital.
- A plastic surgery and repairing of wounds was also part of the medical procedures that Saif had to undergo at Lilavati Hospital.
- Saif is completely stable and out of danger now, confirmed the hospital.
- A statement from Saif Ali Khan's team said that the actor is currently in recovery and doctors are monitoring his progress.
What The Police Said
- An FIR has been launched at the Bandra Police Station against an intruder.
- A police official told PTI that an unidentified person entered Saif Ali Khan's home, and some of the actor's family members were also present in the house at the time of the attack.
- Three attendants, who work at Saif Ali Khan's house, are being questioned by the police.
- Saif Ali Khan's attacker is suspected to be related to one of his house helps, since CCTV footage from the building shows no outsider entry into the building after midnight, say police.
- After questioning all the housekeepers and staff at Saif Ali Khan's Bandra home, the police suspect that the attacker appears to be someone familiar to one of the housekeepers working there.
- Speaking to the media, a forensic department officer said, "We have collected the fingerprints from the spot."
- The Mumbai Crime Branch has been tasked with a parallel investigation.
- NDTV has exclusively learnt that the Mumbai Crime Branch have zeroed in on a suspect who is allegedly behind the attack on Saif Ali Khan.
- According to the Crime Branch, the unknown person entered Saif's home from the adjacent building, and jumped the wall to enter his premises.
- The Crime Branch has formed 15 teams to search for the suspect.
- A team is scanning the CCTV footage for clues.
- Three teams have left for different areas of Mumbai.
- A team will go out of Mumbai in search of the suspect.
- On Thursday morning, sniffer dogs were seen outside Saif's home in Bandra (West).
- According to Mumbai Police, the attack occurred late Wednesday night when the intruder had a confrontation with the actor's maid.
- As Saif Ali Khan tried to intervene and de-escalate the situation, the unknown individual became aggressive, leading to a scuffle in which the actor was injured.
- Police are currently investigating the matter.
- Deputy Commissioner of Police, Dixit Gedam, told ANI, "The actor and the intruder had a scuffle. The actor is injured and is being treated. Investigation is ongoing."
Statements From Saif And Kareena's Teams
- A statement from Saif Ali Khan's team said, "There was an attempted burglary at Mr Saif Ali Khan's residence. He is currently in hospital undergoing a surgery. We request the media and fans to be patient. It is a police matter."
- Kareena Kapoor's team confirmed that the rest of the family is doing fine. The statement read, "There was an attempted burglary in Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan's residence last night. Saif had an injury on his arm for which he is in hospital, undergoing a procedure. The rest of the family is doing fine. We request media and fans to be patient and not speculate any further as the Police are already doing their due investigations. Thank you all for your concern."
- On Thursday afternoon, Saif Ali Khan's team said in an official statement, "Saif Ali Khan has come out of surgery and is out of danger. He is currently in recovery and the doctors are monitoring his progress. All family members are safe and the police is investigating the incident. We would like to thank Dr Niraj Uttamani, Dr Nitin Dange, Dr Leena Jain and the team at Lilavati hospital. Thank you to all his fans and well-wishers for their prayers and thoughts during this time."
Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor Khan and their kids Taimur and Jeh were in Switzerland for the New Year holidays. They returned to Mumbai last week.
