Sooraj Barjatya's magnum opus Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, starring Salman Khan in the double role of Prince Vijay and commoner Prem, has raked in very real dhan at the box office. At home, the film has made just a shade under Rs 130 crores. Business abroad has taken its worldwide total since opening on last Thursday, a day after Diwali, to Rs 250 crore gross. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh announced the latest figures on Twitter:
Box Office India reports that PRDP has recorded the third highest opening weekend, trailing Aamir Khan's Dhoom: 3, Salman's own Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Shah Rukh Khan's Happy New Year.
The film, Salman's ninth blockbuster in a row, is also a smash hit overseas with a blockbuster debut in America.
PRDP closed day one with box office receipts in the region of Rs 40 crores net, breaking Happy New Year's opening day record set in Diwali 2014. It also marked the biggest single day of all time, defeating the first Sunday figures of Bajrangi Bhaijaan and PK which were about Rs 38.50 crores nett. It is the fifth film of 2015 to makes over Rs 100 crore after Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Tanu Weds Manu Returns, Baahubali and Any Body Can Dance 2.
Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, which co-stars Sonam Kapoor, is Salman's fourth film with the Barjatyas after Maine Pyar Kiya, Hum Aapke Hain Koun and Hum Saath Saath Hain. Like all these films, PRDP is family-themed and also includes Swara Bhaskar, Neil Nitin Mukesh and Anupam Kher in the cast.
