London: British singer Sam Smith has recorded Writing's on the Wall, the theme song of SPECTRE , the 24th instalment in the James Bond series of movies. He counts it as a "highlight" of his career. (Also Read: Billboard Awards 2015: Taylor Swift, Sam Smith Lead Nominations)
On September 78, the Grammy and Brit award-winning singer took to Instagram to announce the news and said: "I hope you all enjoy the song as much as I enjoyed making it."
Albert R Broccoli's EON Productions, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios and Sony Pictures Entertainment have also confirmed the new.
"This is one of the highlights of my career. I am honoured to finally announce that I will be singing the next Bond theme song. I am so excited to be a part of this iconic British legacy and join an incredible line up of some of my biggest musical inspirations," he added.
It is the first Bond theme song recorded by a British male solo artist, since 1965.
"Writing's on the Wall will surely be considered one of the greatest Bond songs of all time," Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, the producers of SPECTRE said in a statement.
Only a few hours ago he made the announcement, the 23-year-old singer had shared an image on Instagram which features a hand, presumably his, sporting a ring with the infamous octopus logo of the organisation SPECTRE.
The song, to be released by Capitol Records, will be available for purchase and online streaming from September 25.
The previous Bond number Skyfall was performed by singer Adele. It was honoured with the Academy Award and Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song, the Brit Award for British Single of the Year and the Grammy Award for Best Song Written for Visual Media. SPECTRE will release in Britain on October 26 and in the US on November 6.
