Mumbai:
Stage actor and daughter of veteran actor Shashi Kapoor, Sanjna Kapoor, has stepped down from Mumbai's Prithvi Theatre to start her own theatre company, Junoon.
"For me to be able to focus on Junoon and give my family time I need to step back from my involvement at Prithvi, so from April 1, 2012, I shall not be the Director of Prithvi Theatre," said Sanjna Kapoor in a statement.Sanjna's brother, Kunal Kapoor will take over the management of Prithvi Theatre.
"Prithvi will continue to do what we have been doing in the last 33 years with some new ideas and innovations - which will be personally supervised by Kunal, along with a new team that will be set up for this purpose," another joint statement from Sanjna and Kunal Kapoor said.
"We are confident that our plans for the future will not only strengthen Prithvi Theatre's objectives, but also greatly add to creating new avenues for strengthening theatre in India,"it said.
Sanjna had been managing the theatre for over 20 years, taking over the mantle completely after her mother Jennifer Kendell Kapoor's death in 1984.
Prithvi Theatre was named after late Prithviraj Kapoor who first founded Prithvi Theatres, a travelling theatre company in 1944.
In 1978, Prithvi Theatre was inaugurated in Juhu by Prithiviraj's son and daughter-in-law, actors Shashi Kapoor and his wife late Jennifer Kendal Kapoor.
One of Mumbai's best known theatres, the company was established in 1993 and until recently was being run by Prithviraj's grandchildren, Kunal and Sanjna Kapoor.
As of today, it hosts daily theatre shows, summertime workshops and plays for children, besides hosting annual theatre festivals and other events.
