A statue of Indian cinemalegend Satyajit Ray was unveiled in Australian city ofMelbourne honouring him for his outstanding contribution inthe field of cinema.
The statue was unveiled by the award winning Australianfilm director Paul Cox in presence of Indian Consul General SK Behera yesterday at Australia India Institute (AII)building.
The ceremony was followed by a film screening of ApurSansar.
The official statement said the unveiling of the statueof Mr Ray, who is considered one of the pioneers of the 20thcentury Indian cinema, is a mark of honour to acknowledgehis outstanding contribution to cinema.
Others present on the occasion were AII directorAmitabh Mattoo, and AII chairman Robert Johanson.Satyajit Ray is most famous for his The Apu trilogy --PatherPanchali (1955), Aparajito (1956) and Apur Sansar (1959).
He was honoured with the Bharat Ratna and an HonoraryOscar in 1992.
