Shabana Azmi, one of Indian cinema's most versatile actresses, celebrates her 62nd birthday today.
A five-time national award winner, Shabana broke new ground in Indian cinema with films such as Ankur (1974), Arth (1982), Mandi (1983) and Khandhar (1984). Her debut film Ankur won her the National Film Award for Best Actress for her performance. She consequently went on to win the national award consecutively for three years from 1983 to 1985 for her roles in the movies, Arth, Khandhar and Paar (1984).
She is also known for her roles in films such as Nishant (1975), Junoon (1978), Sparsh (1980), Saaz (1998) and Earth (1998) to name a few.
Shabanaji is also an activist and is known for her active interest and participation on issues of social justice and women's empowerment. She has also campaigned against ostracism of AIDS victims.
Perhaps the most academically qualified actress in India so far, the veteran actress also received her fourth doctorate, this time from the Simon Fraser University in Vancouver on June 12 this year.
Her most recent movies include Matru Ki Bijli Ka Mandola (2012) and The Reluctant Fundamentalist (2013).
