Diwali blockbuster Happy New Year, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone, now holds the record for the biggest opening day collection. The film's first day earnings are estimated to be around Rs 44 crores.
According to a statement released by the production house, the film has earned a "record breaking opening at the box-office in India"
"Red Chillies Entertainments (RCE) Pvt Ltd announced on Saturday that their latest release, Happy New Year had a record breaking opening in the box office in India. It has collected Rs 44.97 crore on the opening day. With Rs 42.62 crore in Hindi, Rs 1.43 crore in Telugu dub and Rs 0.92 crore in Tamil dub, Happy New Year has become the highest opening day ranker in Indian films so far," said the statement.
Commenting on the performance of the film's box office performance, Venky Mysore, CEO of Red Chillies Entertainment, said: "We are delighted that the audience across India has responded brilliantly and shown their support for a film that has been produced with a lot of passion and love."
Gaurav Verma, chief revenue officer at Red Chillies Entertainment, added: "The partnership with Yash Raj Films in developing our distribution strategy has been excellent and has contributed to the record breaking opening."
The previous record for opening day collections was held by Aamir Khan's Dhoom: 3 which made Rs 32 crores on day one. The trinity of Khan superstars - Shah Rukh, Aamir and Salman - have dominated the Bollywood box office in recent years, smashing record after record with films like 3 Idiots, Dabangg, Ek Tha Tiger and Chennai Express.
Happy New Year is a heist film and musical rolled into one, starring SRK and Deepika as two of a gang of 'losers' who enter a dance competition but actually intend to steal diamonds from a bank. Abhishek Bachchan, Boman Irani, Sonu Sood and Vivaan Shah make up the rest of the 'losers.' Happy New Year is directed by Farah Khan, who previously made Main Hoon Na with SRK, and Om Shanti Om with both SRK and Deepika.
