Sharmilaji said that the portrayal of women in cinema had changed over the decades and they were 'increasingly grabbing meaty roles'. However, as per her, the pay gap still remained.

"There is no parity. Male actors are still getting more and women are getting less. So that needs to change. In my time, the difference was much more. In my time, we (women) definitely played a secondary role. Now the perception has changed," Sharmilaji told the press on the sidelines of the 21st Kolkata International Film Festival.

Citing examples of films like Piku and Dil Dhadakne Do, the Aradhana actress said 'things were changing' for women in the film industry.

"Things are changing and it will take time. But we need not despair," she said.

Sharmilaji also mentioned that some films continued to portray women as 'secondary characters.'
