Shilpa Shirodkar: Ek Muthi Aasman is a fresh start for me

Shilpa Shirodkar: Ek Muthi Aasman is a fresh start for me
Shilpa Shirodkar will play the role of a domestic worker in her new TV show
New Delhi: Actress Shilpa Shirodkar, who is making her acting comeback with the TV show Ek Muthi Aasman, says the show gave her a chance to start afresh and connect with a new set of audience.

Shirodkar started her journey in Bollywood with 1989 film Bhrashtachar before starring in '90s hits like Kishen Kanhaiya, Hum and Gopi Kishan. She left Bollywood in 2000 after marrying merchant banker Apresh Ranjit.

The actress will be seen playing the role of a Mumbai domestic worker in the Zee TV show, which is expected to air next month.

"It would be stupid if I say that I should start from where I left. I have changed and evolved. I have to make a new beginning and this show is a fresh start for me," Shirodkar told PTI in an interview.

The show talks about the hardships that a domestic worker in Mumbai endures and tries to make people more sensitive towards their dreams and aspirations.

"As an actor it is my privilege to play this role and I am hoping it will bring change. I am blessed to be performing Kamla Bai which is going to reach every home. As an actor it is a brilliant opportunity."

Shirodkar, 43, says she recognised the value of domestic help while staying in London for many years and raising a nine-year-old daughter.

Ask her whether she missed being in the spotlight, Shirodkar says she was too busy enjoying her time as a mother to think about Bollywood.

"It has been one of the most beautiful things that have happened to me. I promote marriage to everybody, I have got a fantastic husband, touch wood. I have a beautiful daughter and I have fantastic in-laws."

While she was away from the showbiz, the industry underwent a lot of changes and Shirodkar is happy to see professionalism around her. "I look at the changes in a good sense. There is more professionalism, more discipline and it was necessary."

But she is amused by the way actors look similar in all the films. "When we were working in 1990s, there was growth of an actor, you could see difference in their make-up, acting. Now, everything is so set for you. An actor pretty much looks the same from his first film till the last."

Shirodkar's wish-list includes working with directors like Karan Johar and Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra.

She is also open to doing negative roles. "Today film making is all about good roles. If I can do a maid's character, then I can do negative roles too as I am an actor. It does not really matter."
