Singer Mubarak Begum Dies at 80

Mumbai: Legendary singer Mubarak Begum died on Monday at her residence in suburban Jogeshwari here after a prolonged illness. She was 80.

"Mubarak Begum is no more with us. She passed away today at 9.30 pm at her residence in Jogeshwari. She was unwell since quite some time," a family member told PTI.

Mubarak Begum is remembered for singing duets and ghazals for Bollywood, mainly during the 1950s-1970s.

Mubarak Begum, who sang evergreen songs such as Kabhi tanhaiyon mein hamari yaad ayegi from the 1961 movie Hamari Yaad Aayegi, was not been keeping well for the last few years.

Through the 1950s and 1960s, she worked with the best music directors in the film industry, collaborating with SD Burman, Shankar Jaikishan and Khayyam for movies that starred screen legends like Sunil Dutt, Nargis and Rajendra Kumar.

O Mere Humrahi and Hum Haal-e-dil sunaenge are some of her other known songs.

In 2011, the Maharashtra government had sanctioned a financial aid of Rs 1 lakh for treatment of the ailing singer.

Her last rites will take place today, family sources said.
