Social reformers as subjects in future Gowariker films?
Kolkata: After bringing alive the exploits of 'Masterda' Surya Sen during the Chittang Armoury Raid of 1930s in Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Se, film director Ashutosh Gowariker is thinking of turning the lens on a social reformer from Bengal.

Though the venture is hypothetical as of now, Gowariker, reeled of the names on his wishlist like social reformer Raja Rammohan Roy, key figure of the Bengal renaissance Iswarchandra Vidyasagar and the bard of Santiniketan Rabindranath Tagore.

He had read up on them who had shunned the path of material success and comforts to rip the veil of ignorance of rigid Indian society of earlier centuries. "I have been intrigued by these people. Who knows if I can make a film on any of these great men 10 years from now," Gowariker told PTI after the special screening of Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Se here last night.

"But don't write Asutosh is making a biopic on any of these men as all thoughts don't get translated into actionalways," he said wagging a finger playfully. Asked what could be the reference point in the event of him making a film on 19th century or early 20th century personalities, Gowariker said, "When I work on any subject, myunderstanding and reading, my research work are my reference points."

On his film, the story of the revolution of 1930, choosing the Chittagong uprising from Manini Chatterjee's book Do or Die, he said, "From the detailed accounts in the book I had to execute the script keeping the spirit intact and it was okayed by Manini."

The film portrays Abhishek Bachchan as Surya Sen who was hanged by the British on 12 January 1934 and Deepika Padukone as Kalpana Dutta, a member of the armed resistance movement led by Surya Sen, which carried out the Chittagong armoury raid, in the lead characters.

Asked if he would make a film on the disillusionment of youth with the present day system, ala Rang De Basanti considering his tribute to young revolutionaries in the present film, Gowariker side-stepped the question.

"I can't make a political film. Beyond reading political news, my grasp of the subject has not reached thelevel as a film-maker," he politely said. Though the celluloid portrayal was a period film, it was unlike Lagaan and Jodha Akbar. Lagaan was a totally fictional work having the feel of history, Gowariker said.
