Sonam Kapoor in Neerja
New Delhi:
Actress Sonam Kapoor, who recently got a Special Mention for her role in Neerja at the 64th National Film Award, says that honour has encouraged her to do content-driven films more, reports news agency IANS. Sonam, 31, will receive the National Award in New Delhi from President Pranab Mukherjee on Wednesday, May 3. "I think I have been doing content-driven films for a couple of years right now, but obviously the National Award is an encouragement to doing more of them," the Raanjhanaa actress told IANS. Sonam portrayed the role of airhostess Neerja Bhanot in the Ram Madhvani-directed film. Neerja also won the Best Hindi film award.
Of the award, Sonam told IANS, "It feels amazing. I honestly did not expect it. It is such a huge validation for doing a film like Neerja, but at the same time it was more important to make a film like Neerja which spoke about human spirit and compassion."
Meanhwhile, Akshay Kumar also won his first ever National Award for playing Naval Officer Rustom Pavri in Rustom.
Sonam and Akshay feature together in Padman and were shooting for R Balki's film when the National Awards announcement were made. Together, they posed for a priceless picture, which spoke about their feelings. Padman is based on the life of Arunachalam Muruganantham, an entrepreneur from Tamil Nadu, who invented low-cost sanitary napkins to generate awareness.
On daughter's big win, an elated Anil Kapoor, Sonam's father, earlier told IANS,"I am very happy, she is so fortunate. In such a short span of time, at such a young age, with such a less number of films, she has got this recognition from the highest award in our country. I am looking forward to the May 3 event when Sonam will be on dais receiving an award from the President of this country. "
Anil Kapoor, wife Sunita will accompany Sonam for the event. "My parents are coming with me. I think they are very excited. I am more happy for them and for Ram (director Ram Madhvani) because I think Ram really wanted me to win the award and I think my parents are very proud," she told IANS.
