New Delhi : The Supreme Court today dismissed rape charges against National award winning director Madhur Bhandarkar after it was told that Preeti Jain, who had accused Mr Bhandarkar, was no longer interested in pursuing the matter after nine years.
The court had stayed criminal proceedings against Madhur Bhandarkar in April this year.
In 2009, actress Preeti Jain accused Madhur Bhandarkar of rape on the pretext of giving her a lead role in his film.
Preeti alleged that she slept with Mr Bhandarkar from 1999-2004 after he promised her a role in his films and marriage. In a statement, Preeti alleged: "We had sex 16 times and Madhur made promises of giving me a lead role in his films. However, he didn't offer me a lead role in any of his movies. At times when I refused, he raped me."
Police submitted its summary report the same year stating that there was no evidence of rape against the director. In 2006, the police asked the court to dismiss the case against Mr Bhandarkar as they found Preeti Jain's allegations to be false. The trial was stayed and Preeti Jain moved the Mumbai court against that order.
In September 2011, the Mumbai court rejected the police report and ruled that Mr Bhandarkar would be tried for rape.
In November last year, the Bombay High Court had granted bail to Mr Bhandarkar on a bond of Rs. 30,000 and two sureties.
