Supreme Court says ok to Birla, Tata, Bata song for Prakash Jha

Supreme Court says ok to Birla, Tata, Bata song for Prakash Jha
The court ruled that the song would not have a negative impact but has directed Mr Jha to put a scrolling and audio disclaimer on-screen during the song.
New Delhi: Film director Prakash Jha's new film Chakravyuh will release with a song whose lyrics refer to Birla, Tata and Bata.

The Supreme Court ruled in Mr Jha's favour today. Bata India had taken him to court over the song titled Mehengai (inflation) which names these firms and suggests they have made huge gains at the public's expense.

Bata India suggests that there is a negative connotation in the song that would adversely affect the company's business interests in India and abroad.

The court ruled that the song would not have a negative impact but has directed Mr Jha to put a scrolling and audio disclaimer on-screen during the song. The court also said that it was a minor issue that need not have appeared before it.

Earlier this week, the Delhi High Court allowed the release of the song Mehengai saying that in the contextual setting of the movie the "song is not defamatory".

Film maker Prakash Jha, who has directed the film, challenged the single-judge order before a division bench of the court. The film is scheduled for release Oct 24. The division bench of Justice Pradeep Nandrajog and Justice Manmohan Singh said: "We are inclined to stay the operation of the impugned order."

The film stars Manoj, Bajpayee, Abhay Deol, Arjun Rampal and Esha Gupta.
