Former Miss Universe Sushmita Sen paid tribute to her successor of the Miss Universe title Chelsi Smith by sharing a throwback picture from her pageant days on Twitter. She wrote: "I loved her smile and that generous spirit! Rest in peace my beautiful friend Chelsi Smith." In the picture, Sushmita Sen, who was Miss Universe 1994, can be seen crowning the late beauty queen. Chelsi Smith died due to liver cancer on September 8 at the age of 45 in Los Angeles. Chelsi Smith won the Miss Texas USA pageant in 1995 and went on to win Miss USA and Miss Universe the same year. She was also one of the first contestant of African-American descend to win the pageant.

Other than Sushmita Sen, other beauty queens also paid tribute to the Chelsi Smith. Shanna Moakler, who was a runner-up at Miss USA 1995, wrote an emotional note for Chelsi Smith on Instagram. "Having a hard time writing this. Found out the news of my good friend passing. I really don't know how to express to the world what a funny, loving, smart," read an excerpt from her post.
