Thalaivaa finally set to release in Tamil Nadu on August 20

Thalaivaa finally set to release in Tamil Nadu on August 20
Thalaivaa was previously scheduled to release on August 9, 2013 in Tamil Nadu.
Chennai: Actor Vijay's film Thalaivaa is likely to be released on Tuesday in Tamil Nadu according to the producers of the movie. They've also decided to drop the tagline "time to lead". Associate Producer Mr Sunil told NDTV, "No body or no group asked us to remove the tagline. In our own interest we have decided to drop it".

The movie was scheduled to release on August 9 in Tamil Nadu but missed the date following bomb threats from an unknown group. There is no clarity yet on the existence of the group and what their objection is. Theatre owners in Tamil Nadu who were reluctant to screen the movie are still tight lipped. However the film has been released across the world.

The actor who has refrained from accusing anyone had first clarified that Thalaivaa is not a political movie. A few days ago the entire team had sought an appointment with Chief Minister Jayalalithaa and pleaded for her intervention.

As there was no response from the chief minister, the team applied for police permission for a day-long hunger strike, but this too was turned down.

Interestingly the Tamil film fraternity is silent on this issue. An actor who spoke on the condition of anonymity says "it's a state where vendetta politics is galore and it's safe to be silent than speaking up and paying for it". The same fraternity had united for the cause of Actor Kamal Haasan's Viswaroopam which the government had banned.

The police chief has denied asking theatres not to screen the film; but they are non-committal on providing security to theatres.

A veteran film producer says "unfortunately off late it has become so difficult to release a movie in the state". He adds "Censor Boards and freedom of expression would become meaningless "if state governments keep interfering in every movie cleared by the Censor Board citing law and order problem; they are tacitly or deliberately orchestrating these unhealthy developments".
