Chennai: Popular Tamil actor Vijay's much-awaited movie Thalaivaa was stalled in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry even as the movie already hit the screens worldwide.

The movie, slated for release on August 9, hit a roadblock following objections by a man called Karnan, hailing from Tirunelveli in the state, who claimed that itwas based on the life of his grandfather S S Kandaswamy andhis father S K Ramaswamy who live in Dharavi in Mumbai.A few theatres in Chennai also received bomb threats froma little known outfit Tamil Nadu Oppressed StudentsRevolutionary Force, who supported the arguments of Karnan,prompting the theatre owners to cancel bookings, which beganon Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu police clarified in a press release hat they had nothing to do with deferring the release of the film. Any delay or deferment is not at the instance of the police. "The decision to release and the date of release are within the domain of the film industry," stated the police statement.

To those who booked tickets over the counter were asked tocome to the theatre and collect their money. Refund fortickets booked online would be done directly to their account,sources in theatre owner's association said."Discussions between theatre owners association and thegovernment officials were progressing for the release of themovie," they said.

The movie was expected to hit around 500 theatres in TamilNadu and Puducherry. While popular Sathyam theatre in Chennaihas cancelled the booking for the film. AGS Cinemas said "dueto unavoidable reasons, Thalaiva movie has been cancelled.We will update about the release shortly."

Social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter werealso abuzz with the news.The movie's official webpage said, "We can update aboutThalaivaa release in Tamil Nadu only after we get someupdates. Be patient. Thanks for all your support".The lead actress in the movie Amala Paul tweeted, "Prayingalong with the whole unit and Vijay fans that Thalaivaa willhit the big screen soon."

The movie's music director G V Prakash Kumar added, "Hopethe Government will understand and give us permission torelease Thalaivaa in Tamil Nadu."

National award winning actor Dhanush extended his supportto the movie saying, "What happened to Thalaivaa is unfair. Iwish they show this kind of effort in making this country abetter place to live than just to ban a film."
