The Book of Mormon Nabs Nine Trophies At Tony Awards

New York: The Book of Mormon, a buddycomedy about two missionaries, swooped the annual Tony Awardswith nine trophies while War Horse took home six trophiesincluding the best play.

The Mormon also won the best musical award at theceremony, which was hosted by funnyman Neil Patrick Harris.The show's haul represents the culmination of atriumphant first foray into Broadway by South Park creatorsTrey Parker and Matt Stone, who teamed with Avenue Qcomposer-lyricist Robert Lopez to write the play, theHollywood Reporter said.

The musical earned awards for Parker, Lopez andStone's book and score, and for Casey Nicholaw and Parker'sdirection.

"We really want to thank the audiences because youguys made the show what it is and I think you're going to haveto atone for it one day," said Parker.

Top play honors went to War Horse, adapted by NickStafford, in association with South Africa's Handspring PuppetCompany, from the British children's novel by MichaelMorpurgo.

The heart warming story of a young farm boy from Devonwho travels to the trenches of World War I France to bereunited with his beloved horse, the book is also beingadapted for the big screen by Steven Spielberg.

Musical-comedy Anything Goes won for musicalrevival, with Sutton Foster bagging a Tony for lead actress ina musical while Kathleen Marshall won for choreography.

Larry Kramer's impassioned 1985 drama against the AIDSepidemic, The Normal Heart, won best play revival for JoelGrey and George C Wolfe's production. It also won matchingfeatured actor nods for John Benjamin Hickey and Ellen Barkin,making her Broadway debut.

Frances McDormand took the trophy for the lead actressin a play for her role as a struggling single mother in DavidLindsay-Abaire's Good People.

Mark Rylance won the lead actor honours for JezButterworth's Jerusalem, in which he plays a hard-partyingthrowback to the dragon-slaying warriors of England's past.The trophy for the lead actor in a musical went toNorbert Leo Butz in Catch Me if You Can.Featured actor in a musical went to multiple Emmywinner John Larroquette in his Broadway debut as the tycoontaken for a ride by Daniel Radcliffe's ambitious young upstartin How to Success in Business Without Really Trying.Popularly known as Tony Award, the Antoinette PerryAward for Excellence in Theatre, honours achievement in liveBroadway theatre. The awards are presented by the AmericanTheatre Wing and The Broadway League at an annual ceremony inNew York City.
