The Italian Job: Best British film ever
London: 1969's classic heist movie, The Italian Job, has been voted the greatest British film of all time in a survey conducted by Sky Movies HD. Starring Michael Caine as the leader of a gang of criminals in Mini Coopers, the film took 15 per cent of the votes to win the top spot - more than half the votes for Monty Python's Life of Brian which came in a distant second. Sleeper hit The Full Monty was voted into third place, reported Sun Online.

The Italian Job was remade in 2003 with an all star lineup of Mark Wahlberg, Charlize Theron, Edward Norton and Jason Statham. It will also be taken for a Bollywood spin by Abbas-Mustan, this time in Indian cars reportedly driven by Abhishek Bachchan, Bobby Deol and Neil Nitin Mukesh.

Michael Caine was third on the list of greatest British actors: top man was Anthony Hopkins with 12 per cent of the votes, Laurence Olivier made it to second place with 10 per cent while Caine is just behind him with 9 per cent.

Judi Dench led the way for greatest British actress, winning by a landslide majority of 25 per cent. Runner up was Helen Mirren with 14 per cent.

Master of suspense Alfred Hitchcock was voted best director.

1,000 film buffs were polled in the survey commissioned to mark the launch of the channel's British Film Season later this month.
