Mumbai: This is one red carpet that will not be rolled out. At least not in the way it was visualised.
Acclaimed director Shoojit Sarcar, who made waves with his 2012 film, Vicky Donor, had managed to convince the late Rituparno Ghosh to write the script of his next film, titled Red Carpet and even act in it.
The otherwise reclusive Rituparno had just started writing the script for the Bengali film before he passed away on May 30. Sarcar, who is currently shooting Madras Café with John Abraham, produced his first Bengali film last year, titled Aparjita Tumi.
"Shoojit wanted to make a Bengali film and wanted Rituda to write it. Initially, he wasn't sure whether the temperamental director would agree to write the script since he was himself busy with his films.
But both of them had worked together during the making of Raincoat and shared a good rapport.
Rituparno had agreed to write the script and also told Shoojit to direct him in the film. The film was supposed to go on the floor as soon as Shoojit completed his film with John, but life had other plans," said a source close to both the directors.
Sarcar confirmed that the film had indeed been planned. "Red Carpet revolved around Rituda's character. The story was about a film magazine editor, who is snooty and cunning, and has an affair with a young girl who has joined the publication as an intern.
The storyline was inspired by Meryl Streep's role in The Devil Wears Prada. I don't think anyone else but Rituda could have played the role of the editor. He was not just a brilliant director but a very sharp actor too," Shoojit signs off.
