At a time when the political class is still debating about the FDI in multiple-brand retail, a parliamentary committee today sought the views of film actor Aamir Khan on the issue of FDI in pharmaceuticals.
Mr Khan, who had recently highlighted malpractices in the medical profession especially among doctors, made a detailed presentation. Sources in the parliamentary committee told NDTV that Aamir argued for allowing higher FDI in pharmaceuticals but made a strong case for price control and cheaper drugs.
Later, speaking to reporters, Aamir Khan, who refused to divulge the details of his presentation, calling it confidential, said he had suggested a win win situation. He urged pharmaceutical companies to sell medicines in bulk and at lower rates.
He also commended the governments of Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan for providing medicines cheaply to poor patients, and that the quality of medicines is good.
Mr Khan professed himself happy to have been included in the discussion. Rajya Sabha MP Shanta Kumar, who heads the parliamentary standing committee on commerce, expects the meeting to lead to positive results.
Mr Khan was invited by the parliamentary committee to provide inputs after an episode of his TV show Satyamev Jayate discussed issues like doctors taking monetary cuts and other unethical medical practices. The episode prompted an umbrella body of doctors' associations to ask him for an apology. He later refused to apologise to the doctors, and said he was willing to face any legal action taken by them.
