Emraan Hashmi and Vidya Balan in a still from Ghanchakkar
New Delhi:
Vidya Balan, best known for her dramatic roles, is now going to be funny in Ghanchakkar, playing quirky Punjabi housewife Neetu.
A comedy thriller, Ghanchakkar features Emraan Hashmi in the lead besides Vidya. The film is directed by Rajkumar Gupta and co-produced by Ronnie Screwvala and Vidya's husband Siddharth Roy Kapur of UTV Motion Pictures.
The story revolves around Emraan's character Sanju, a master safe cracker, who decides to team up with two dangerous criminals to commit one last heist, before retiring. But, in the course of time, Sanju meets with an accident and loses his memory. He forgets where he stashed the loot money, which leads to a comedy of errors.
After playing strong, independent women characters in films, Vidya Balan reveals she had no qualms in playing second fiddle to Emraan.
"I am glad that I am not playing the protagonist in Ghanchakkar. I have done it before so many times. This is Emraan's film. He is the main lead here. And I am very happy and comfortable with it. It gives me more scope to perform. I can be free and not feel any pressure about it," Vidya said.
"The only take away for women from this film is that it is about a housewife, who is very happy with herself. She does not care about her weight, her habits, her looks. According to her , she is the best and there is a certain amount of confidence in her," Vidya added.
This is Vidya's second film with director Rajkumar Gupta, after the critically and commercially successful No One Killed Jessica, which was based on the controversial Jessica Lal murder case.
Also up for release is Hollywood film The Heat. An action comedy, the film is directed by Paul Feig, and features Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy in the lead. The two actresses will be seen playing FBI agents in the film, who must take down a Russian mobster.
Also out today is the thriller Hummingbird, directed by Steven Knight and starring The Transporter actor Jason Statham.
