Fans can choose between a biopic and a sci-fi film today
New Delhi: The long wait is over and Milkha Singh will finally come sprinting onto the big screen today with Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. Aiming to give it tough competition at the Indian box office is Hollywood sci-fi film Pacific Rim.

Based on the life of Indian athlete Milkha Singh, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag features actor Farhan Akhtar in the lead as the Flying Sikh.

Produced and directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, it also features Sonam Kapoor in a supporting role. Mr Mehra also makes his big screen debut in the film with a cameo as does Pakistani model-singer-actress Meesha Shafi.

Milkha Singh sold the rights to his story to Mr Mehra for just one rupee and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag will be the first film to donate all proceeds to India's needy athletes.

The name of the film comes from the last words spoken by the track star's father who told the young Milkha to run and save his life during the Partition riots.

Then there's director Guillermo del Toro's long-awaited Pacific Rim, a visual effect laden potboiler set in the near-future.

Unlike most other alien attack films, Pacific Rim's giant monsters rise from a portal beneath the Pacific Ocean.

Called Kaiju, these leviathans are razing mankind and everything in between off the face of Earth. In order to combat them, humans build giant robots known as Jaegers.

These Jaegers are piloted by two humans with their memories intertwined with each other's and locked in a neural bridge. Pacific Rim features an ensemble cast with Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Rob Kazinsky, Max Martini and Guillermo Del Toro's favourite and often repeated Ron Perlman. Also releasing today is Shorts, which is a bouquet of five short films made by five different directors namely Neeraj Ghaywan, Shlok Sharma, Siddharth Gupta, Anirban Roy and Rohit Pandey.
