Its Bollywood vs Hollywood at the box office today with Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes set for release.
Rom-com Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, promoted as a modern-day version of 1995 cult movie Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, stars Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt in the lead roles.
Produced by Karan Johar and directed by debutant Shashank Khaitan, the movie reunites Alia and Varun after their debuts in 2012's Student Of The Year. TV actor Siddharth Shukla, who stars in the show Balika Vadhu, will make his Bollywood debut with this movie. Alia plays Kavya, a small town girl from Ambala, on the brink of an arranged marriage. She reportedly falls in love with Delhi-based Humpty Sharma (played by Varun) after she visits the capital to shop for her wedding. Alia will also be heard crooning the song Main Tainu Samjhawa Ki in the movie.
Also up for release today is sci-fi film Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, a sequel to the 2011 film Rise of the Planet of the Apes. The plot revolves around the genetically evolved chimp Caesar (played by Andy Serkis) who is the leader of metamorphosed apes in a post-apocalyptic world. Jason Clarke, Gary Oldman and Keri Russell play surviving humans and, after a temporary truce, a battle for dominance follows. Freida Pinto, who starred in the previous movie, does not appear in this one but her co-star James Franco has a cameo.
