Today's Cinema Is More Keen On Entertaining, Says Deepti Naval

New Delhi: Deepti Naval, the face ofparallel films of and 80s, feels that today realistic cinemais more keen on entertaining the masses rather than dealingwith sensitive issues diligently.

The 54-year-old actress, last seen in Memories inMarch, is all set to make a comeback on the small screen withColors show Mukti Bandhan and the Angoor star feels thattelevision content has become stronger over the years.

"Today's realistic cinema is parallel new wave cinemawith entertaining realism. But the films are more keen onentertaining because a lot of money is being spent on them. The realistic films are only going for comedy such as TereBin Laden and Bheja Fry," says Naval, who is also debutingas a director with her Do Paise Ki Dhoop, Chaar Aane KiBaarish.

"The content in our films used to portray sensitiveissues superbly. Films like Aradhna, Sangam and Guidehave a set a mark and are still close to our hearts. But Ifeel that today's films like Guzaarish, Paa and Rajneeti, which term themselves as commercial are more sensitive toeveryday issues," says Naval.

The dusky actress, who was once married to directorPrakash Jha, started her film career with Junoon in 1978 andwent on to work in Ek Baar Phir (1980), Chashme Baddoor(1981), Guddu (1995) and many more.

But this year when her film Memories in March gotunnoticed, Naval decided to make a comeback on the smallscreen with Mukti Bandhan."When I got a cold response after Memories in March,I decided that I should move to television now. I want my workto be resonated and I feel that a character really grows ontelevision."

She even feels that the content has become strong intelevision from last couple of years.

"What used to be in cinema earlier like strongsubjects reflecting the various problems in the society havenow captured our television," said Naval who has written,produced, directed and acted in a serial called Thoda saasmaan in 1993 and acted in Muqammal in 2003.

Naval is also busy with things other than cinema. Hershort story collection is round the corner and her poetrycollection from all her wanderings over the year will releasein October.

"My directorial venture Do Paise Ki Dhoop, Chaar AaneKi Baarish with Manisha Koirala is also ready for release,"says Naval.
