Actor Emraan Hashmi, who is still basking in the glory of Once Upon A Time in Mumbai, says, it is unfair to label Australia as a racist country as there are similar problems in India.
"When we jumped the gun and say that a particular nation, Australia is racist, it is unfair. It is because of handful people who have regressive attitude towards other culture or people. Before pointing fingers at Australia, we should look at our own backyard. We have problems in our nation and every nation faces it, either it is politically motivated or some personal reasons," said Emraan.
The 31-year-old actor's upcoming film 'Crook' deals with racial discrimination on Indians in Australia. The movie is directed by Mohit Suri.
"In my family, father was a Muslim, mother a Catholic and my wife is a Hindu. I don't understand racism," he said.
Earlier, Emraan had claimed that a housing society in Pali Hill in suburban Bandra refused to grant him permission to buy an apartment because he is a Muslim. The housing society rejected the allegations and in turn accused Hashmi and his family of intimidatory behaviour.
Later the actor backtracked from his own statement and said that the housing society has not discriminated against him and termed the incident as a "miscommunication".
Commenting on the subject of the film, Emraan said, "The film touches the serious issue of racial discrimination with Indians in Australia but it has its fun and light moments. There is a lot of comedy and humour which makes 'Crook' an entertaining outing."
About his role, Emraan said, "I play the role of Jay Dixit who is a brat and believes it is good to be bad. But in the end he realises that he should fight for his country and rights of its citizens in Australia."
In the film, Emraan will be seen opposite newbie Neha Sharma.
The film will hit cinema houses on October 8.
