New Delhi: Varun Dhawan's Judwaa 2 is off to a promising start with 'excellent' occupancies in early show, tweeted trade analyst Taran Adarsh. "Finally, some respite for the Hindi film industry. Judwaa 2 flies high as it opens to excellent houses. Expect a solid total on Day 1," he said. A few hours after this tweet, Taran Adarsh shared the box office collection of the early shows in gulf region, which cemented our faith in his previous statement. "Judwaa 2 fetches one of the best starts in UAE-GCC (Rs 1.73 crore), which is 40 per cent higher than Varun's Badrinath Ki Dulhania (which released in February)," he tweeted. Judwaa 2 is directed by David Dhawan and it also stars Jacqueline Fernandez and Taapsee Pannu.
The film has been panned by film critics but hailed by Bollywood celebs. If Saibal Chatterjee is to be believed then Judwaa 2 has "absolutely nothing new to offer." But Alia Bhatt says, "It's everything you imagine it to be and more." Also, Raja Sen wrote in his review for NDTV that Varun trying "to match a marvellously inane Salman Khan performance" was a "bad move." On the contrary Karan Johar says that Varun is the "heartbeat of the film."
Judwaa 2, which is a remake of Salman Khan's 1997 film Judwaa, opened in over 4,000 screens worldwide.
Judwaa 2's primary box office competitor is Mahesh Babu's SPYder, which hit the screens two days back. SPYder, a Rs 120 crore film has reportedly made over Rs 50 crore in two days and shows no signs of stopping. According to taran Adarsh and trade analyst Ramesh Bala, SPYder is getting a strong response in Mumbai and USA, which are Judwaa 2's key money minting markets.
Last week's Newton, starring Rajkummar Rao, has maintained a steady pattern over the week and has scrapped a respectable amount at the ticket window - Rs 11.83 crore. The fact that Newton is India's official entry for the Oscars has also generated audience's interest in the film.
Sanjay Dutt's Bhoomi and Shraddha Kapoor's Haseena Parkar seemed promising but failed to deliver at the box office.
