New Delhi:
"PadMan trailer impresses everyone," read a tweet on Sunday afternoon, after the trailer of Akshay Kumar's film scored over 20 million views in two days - the trailer released on Friday morning. The trailer has garnered over 20,548,710 views in 48 hours - and tops the list of trending videos on YouTube. On Sunday morning, the PadMan trailer was liked over 3 lakh times on YouTube. "I'm really, really thrilled. Trailer ko kya mast response mila h yaar," tweeted an Akshay Kumar fan. Soon after its release, one of the many reasons the PadMan trailer was also cheered for was that it started a conversation on periods.
PadMan actually stars Akshay Kumar as Arunachalam Muruganantham, who invented low-cost sanitary napkin making machines. Soon after the trailer released, the real life PadMan tweeted to say: "I'm so moved by the trailer. Thanks to Twinkle Khanna. I don't think anyone could've done justice portraying me like the way Akshay Kumar ji did in PadMan. Great work R Balki and team!"
Twinkle Khanna is producing PadMan as part of her production firm Mrs Funnybones Movies and R Balki directs Akshay Kumar in the movie. Padman also stars Sonam Kapoor as Rhea (who helps the protagonist reach out with his new invention) and Radhika Apte as the onscreen PadMan's wife Gayatri. Amitabh Bachchan, who is the narrator in the trailer, also has a cameo in the film.
The subject of the movie and now, its trailer, is being widely hailed by celebrities and netizens alike. Hrithik Roshan, Sridevi, Preity Zinta and others have highlighted that PadMan's release will lead to the beginning of a conversation about menstruatual hygiene. Twinkle, speaking to IANS at an event, said: "Something that has been hidden in the darkness, furtively wrapped in newspaper, will finally be in the spotlight so that a young girl can go up to her parents and say that she needs sanitary pads over the ubiquitous fairness creams."
