Actress Waheeda Rehman will be the first recipient of the Centenary Award for the Indian Film Personality of the Year, an annual honour being introduced to commemorate 100 years of Indian cinema. Ms Rehman, star of classic films like Pyaasa and Guide, will receive the award at the IFFI festival in Goa on November 20.
The award, which is accompanied by a Rs 10 lakh cash prize, will be accorded the same importance as the Dadasaheb Phalke Award which honours a film personality for excellence in cinema every year.
Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari tweeted: Congratulations to Waheeda Rehman ji for being conferred the Inaugural Centenary Award for the Indian Film Personality of the Year-2013 Award has been instituted to mark 100 yrs of Indian Cinema It would be an annual feature Consists of cash component of 10 lacs & a citation.
Waheeda Rehman received the Padma Shri in 1972 and the Padma Bhushan in 2011. She won the National Award for Best Actress in 1971 for Reshma Aur Shera, and Filmfare Awards for Best Actress in 1966 for Guide and 1968 for Neel Kamal.
Indian cinema celebrated it's centenary on May 3, exactly 100 years to the day Dadasaheb Phalke released the first Indian film Raja Harishchandra in 1913.
