On December 24, 1999, Indian Airlines Flight IC 814 was en route from Kathmandu, Nepal, to New Delhi, India, when it was hijacked. The plane, carrying 180 passengers and crew, was forced to divert to multiple locations due to the refusal of some countries to let it land

After stops in Amritsar, Lahore, and Dubai—where 27 passengers were released—the hijackers took the plane to Kandahar, Afghanistan
