When Nehru wept listening to Lata's "Mere vatan ke logon..."
Pune: As she waited for a cup of coffeebackstage after rendering her evergreen patriotic song E merevatan ke logon, Lata Mangeshkar was told that the PrimeMinister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, wanted to see her.

Interviewed by her musician-brother HridaynathMangeshkar on a Marathi channel, Lata who turned 81,recalled this famous episode in Delhi in the early 1960s, whenthe patriotic verse penned by poet Pradeep touched the heartsof all Indians.

"It was Mehboob Khan who took me to Panditji when Iwas sitting in a room waiting for a cup of coffee aftersinging the number. Panditji said to me "Tumne mujherulaya.... (you made me weep)," said the legendary singer.

The song was a sentimental tribute to the sacrificesmade by the jawans defending the nation's frontiersin the wake of the 1962 Chinese aggression.

"Standing by the side of Panditji as he spoke to mewere S Radhakrishnan (the then President) and Indiraji," Latareminisced with misty eyes.

She had wanted to sing the poem jointly with hersister Asha Bhonsle, but Pradeep and C Ramchandra, whocomposed the music, wanted it to be a solo.
