Mumbai: Actress Kareena Kapoor, who is expecting a baby with husband Saif Ali Khan, told reporters at the Lakme Fashion Week in Mumbai on Sunday that "every human being has the right to have a family." Kareena, 35, was speaking about government's proposal to ban hiring women to carry babies.
"I think every human being has the right to have a family, that is something I deeply believe in. I think that is something every person on the planet has a privilege of having - a family. If there are some unfortunate people who can't, or some people who choose to (via surrogacy), I think they have a right to that," said Kareena, who was the show-stopper for designer Sabyasachi.
Last week, Minister for External Affairs Sushma Swaraj briefed the press about the proposed changes to India's surrogacy rules. Ms Swaraj named no names but also said that "celebrities are having surrogate babies, in spite of having two children, they had a third, just because the wife couldn't take the pain, and got someone else to bear their child."
Actors Aamir Khan and Tusshar Kapoor have had children via surrogacy. Shah Rukh Khan and his wife Gauri are also rumoured to have used a surrogate for the birth of their youngest child, AbRam.
At Lakme Fashion Week, Kareena described walking the ramp pregnant as an "emotional moment."
"Everyone made this edition so special for me. For me, it is quite an emotional moment as this was the first time we (she and her future child) took the ramp together. It was a moment to cherish," the actress told reporters at the post-show conference.
"I was happy and confident. Pregnant woman can walk and fly and for me it's absolutely normal. When it comes to my work, acting is my passion and I will work till I die. As long as I am doing what I love, I am going to do that," she said.
Kareena Kapoor will be working on the film Veere Di Wedding during her pregnancy.
