When in New York, do as the New Yorkers do. British royal couple Prince William and his wife, the former Kate Middleton, were in an Empire State of Mind on December 8, attending a basketball game on the first day of their three-day visit to the Big Apple.

They weren't the only famous faces watching the Brooklyn Nets play the Cleveland Cavaliers. Music power couple Beyonce and Jay-Z, possibly the closest thing America has to royalty of its own, were also in the bleachers and met the royal visitors from across the Atlantic, walking across the court in the second half. The soundtrack, appropriately, was British anthem God Save the Queen and Bey and Jay's hit single Crazy in Love.

By all accounts, the real action was in the stands, with fans milling around the famous four, taking pictures of them rather than of the baskets being made on court.

Prince William, casually dressed in a checked shirt, was spotted explaining the finer points of the game to his pregnant wife Kate, very spiffy in a silver-grey Tory Burch coat and black skinny jeans.

Beyonce wore a printed shirt and black pencil skirt while Jay-Z was dressed in the height of hip-hop fashion - an all-black outfit with white trainers and a gold chain.

William and Kate also posed backstage with LeBron James, who steered Cleveland Cavaliers to victory, holding the team's jersey.
