Actor William Shatner, who appeared in many films of Star Trek original franchise, says he will be happy to star in an upcoming installment of its reboot series.

The original series began in 1979 and was followed by five instalments, retaining the old cast including Shatner, who played Captain Kirk, reported Aceshowbiz.

The reboot series began in 2009 with Star Trek, which was followed by Star Trek Into Darkness last year.

Mr Shatner, 83, has been reportedly approached to reprise his role in Star Trek 3. "It depends on what you do with the character, I'd be delighted," he said on his return to the series.

The actor said he was sworn to secrecy about his possible involvement in the film, but later it was all over the internet.

"I would love to do it. But how do you get me fifty years later into the movie? I mean how do you rationalise it. I know it's science fiction, but even I couldn't come up with an idea. So that's the news on that," he added.

The new Star Trek film is slated for a 2016 release, but an exact date isn't set yet. Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana who starred in the previous two films are expected to return.
