Aamir Khan in a still from PK
New Delhi:
Aamir Khan's PK released in China last Friday and has shattered box office records again to become the best performing Indian film abroad of all time. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted:
The film's collections on Day 2 in the country are higher than the corresponding figures for USA, UK and Middle East respectively.
Dubbed in Chinese, PK opened in 4,600 screens across the country - one of the widest releases any Indian film has received abroad.
Team PK - actor Aamir Khan, director Rajkumar Hirani and producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra - toured China last week to promote their film which premiered in Shanghai on May 13. In Beijing the next day, Aamir Khan told news agency ANI: "The fact that even people in China liked 3 Idiots which dealt with issues of education proves that all human beings are essentially the same."
PK released on December 19 last year and collected Rs 615 crores worldwide, breaking Aamir Khan's own record of Dhoom: 3's total earnings of Rs 540 crores at home and abroad.
PK, in which Aamir plays a displaced alien who challenges conventional notions of religion and God, has been accused by some of being anti-Hindu. It co-stars Anushka Sharma, Sushant Singh Rajput and Sanjay Dutt.
May has brought much-needed cheer to the Bollywood box office at home as well. Tanu Weds Manu Returns, which released on May 22, has had a stupendous opening day making almost Rs 22 crore within the first two days of its release.
Meanwhile, Piku, which released on May 8, continues its onward march and is expected to cross Rs 70 cr this weekend.
PK is now the HIGHEST grossing Indian film ever in Overseas: 28.1 million [178.34 cr]. ALL TIME BLOCKBUSTER.
