Los Angeles: The New Girl actress - who split from husband Ben Gibbard earlier this year after two years of marriage - is currently single but looking for someone who is able to sustain a conversation while also showing a good sense of humour.
She said: "I think intelligence and humour are probably the most attractive traits in a guy."
The 32-year-old beauty admits her work schedule means she can't see her pals as often as she would like but she insists she is still a good friend.
She told Britain's Cosmopolitan magazine: "I still have time for friends but it's not like I see them every day.
Unfortunately, it's never the same as when you're at school and you get to eat lunch every day with your friends. But if I didn't have time for my friends that would be terrible.
"The one thing I can't always give a friend is time, but I can be thoughtful in other ways instead."
Zooey hates the way women can be competitive with one another as she believes female friendship is very important.
She added: "Girls get competitive as though there's only one spot in the world for everything - but that's not true.
"Just because one girl gets something doesn't mean you won't get something else.
"I think we can make that less true if we encourage each other more. We need to stick together and see there's more to life than pleasing men.
"It's important not to cut yourself off from female friendships. I think sometimes girls get scared of other girls, but you need each other."
