'Spark'ing a bright idea: New innovations in auto sector

Bangalore: Technology is one of the ways we can make sure we do the least damage to the environment. Here's how Toyota is making our cars more efficient.

Instead of simply looking at future vehicles that will be emission friendly. A number of manufacturers are now looking at ways to improve on existing technologies.

Sandeep Singh, Deputy MD, Marketing, Toyota Kirloskar Motors: "We've taken 2 new initiatives with regard to improving the fuel efficiency and environment, we've just launched a premier spark plug and fuel efficient diesel engine oil so the fuel efficiency of the vehicle will go up by 4 %."

The iridium spark plug was launched a couple of months ago and is aimed at all petrol driven models like the petrol Innova and the Corolla altis... The 'iridium' electrode ensures higher ignitability than the normal plugs, which are made of nickel...it therefore reduces misfires and improves combustion... With minimum fuel used, efficiency goes up.

The diesel engine oil is meant for all of Toyota's diesel powered vehicles like the Qualis, Innova diesel and the fortuner. This specialist engine oil uses an additive that reduces engine deposits. Thus, improving efficiency. The oil is manufactured using group 3 base oil which has less sulphur content, which reduces noxious fumes in emissions.

Pradeep, a consumer says, "Two months back i fitted my Corolla with a new iridium spark plug which is supposed to be eco friendly, and with the new spark plug the mileage is better , much smoother ride and though its slightly more expensive but the lifespan is more."

The price of the iridium spark plug is 950 rupees, which is 4 times more than a regular plug, while the special diesel engine oil is priced at Rs 225/litre, and is slightly more than the regular engine oil which is 210rs/litre. The extra money spent would get you greater mileage and help you go green in a small part.
