Loneliness May Almost Double The Risk of Type 2 Diabetes: Study
Loneliness could increase the risk of developing Type-2 diabetes, suggests a new study. According to the wide ranging study, people who went out to clubs or engaged more socially had significantly reduced chances of suffering from Type 2 diabetes. The scientists claim that the study could be path-breaking intervention in the studies dedicated to study Type-2 diabetes. According to the study, social engagement and having larger social networks could be amongst the certain lifestyle changes, which could ultimately reduce the number of people developing the condition.

The published in the open access journal BMC Public Health said that lack of participation in clubs or other social groups was associated with a whopping 112 per cent higher odds of type 2 diabetes in women. Whereas in men, lack of social participation saw a 42 per cent higher odds of type 2 diabetes.
Men who were living alone were found to be at an even greater risk, with some 94 percent higher odds of type 2 diabetes noted the study.

High-risk groups for type 2 diabetes should steer towards more social engagement and broadening their social groups, said the researchers. They should make new friends, as well as become members of a club, such as a volunteer organisation, sports club or discussion group, suggested the researchers.

Pointing as to how people living lonely solitary lives were more prone to developing type 2 diabetes, the researchers claimed how their study is one of the first study to determine the association of a broad range of social network characteristics - such as social support, network size or type of relationships - with different stages of type 2 diabetes.

The researchers also said that they are still researching on the cause and effect of the analysis. Early changes in glucose metabolism may cause people to feel tired and unwell, which could explain why individuals want to limit their social participation.
