When it comes to sweet treats, India has a rich culinary heritage and delicious variety we all can be proud of. Different regions have their own dessert and mithai specialities. While some are part of regular consumption, others are made only during festivals and religious occasions. Recently, two Indian sweet dishes have been brought to the global limelight after being named among the 10 Best Puddings in the world. Although "pudding" is not the term we usually associate with these delicacies, their general ingredients and method of preparation have led to them being considered in this category. The list was released by Taste Atlas, a popular food and travel guide.

The delectable phirni was ranked 7th whereas kheer was ranked 10th. Phirni is especially popular in North India and is made using ground rice, milk, sugar and cardamom. Taste Atlas has explained, "Traditionally served in small clay bowls known as shikoras, phirni is always eaten well-chilled and garnished with nuts, rose petals, and often with silver paper or chandi warq to make it even more luxurious." Kheer or payasam also often has a rice and milk base. However, several other varieties exist too. This sweet treat is specially made during festivals and may be flavoured with different spices, nuts and fruits.

What about the other entries in the list? At the top is an Iranian delicacy called sholeh zard, which is a saffron rice pudding. According to Taste Atlas, ''Sholeh zard is typically served in individual-sized portions and comes garnished with ground cinnamon, slivered almonds, or pistachios''. Many will recognise the occupant of the 8th place: Italy's world-famous panna cotta. Turkiye has not just two, but three sweet dishes among the top 10. Firin sutlac, an oven-baked rice pudding flavoured with rose water or vanilla, occupies the 2nd place. Turkish Kazandibi (translates as "burnt bottom pudding") has been ranked 5th while Tavuk gogsu (a unique pudding made with chicken breast) has come 9th.
