Are you looking to grow long tresses? Well, it looks like researchers from the University of California in Los Angeles in the Unites States have discovered a new way to activate the stem cells in the hair follicle, an advance discovery that may pave the way for novel drugs to promote hair growth. Hair follicle stem cells are long-lived cells in the hair follicle. They are present in the skin and produce hair throughout a person's lifetime. They are generally inactive but quickly activate during a new hair cycle, that's when new hair growth occurs. The inactivity of the stem cells, which is known as quiescence is regulated by many factors. In certain cases, they fail to activate, which is what causes hair loss. The researchers found that hair follicle stem cell metabolism is different from other cells of the skin. The Cellular metabolism includes the breakdown of the nutrients needed for cells to divide, make energy and respond to their environment. "Our observations about hair follicle stem cell metabolism prompted us to examine whether genetically diminishing the entry of pyruvate into the mitochondria would force hair follicle stem cells to make more lactate, and if that would activate the cells and grow hair more quickly," said Heather Christofk, an associate professor at UCLA.

The study that was published in the journal Nature Cell Biology stated that the idea of using drugs to stimulate hair growth through hair follicle stem cells is very promising given how many millions of people, both men and women, deal with hair loss. Scientists have recently understood the importance and role of metabolism in hair growth and stem cells. While we still may have to wait for proven results, nothing can really beat foods that may help to promote hair growth. Here are some foods that you should include in your daily diet-

1. Eggs

Your hair is made up of protein, therefore it is imperative to ensure that you have enough protein in your diet. Protein is considered as the building block of hair and eggs make for the best sources of protein.

2. Citrus Fruits

Add citrus fruits including lemon and grapefruit to your daily diet as they are an excellent sources of vitamin C which is required for the production of collagen that plays a role in the production of capillaries. Capillaries connect to the hair shafts thus ensuring regular supply of nutrients and quick hair growth.

3. Nuts and Seeds

Nuts and seeds have omega-3 fatty acids that help nourish your hair and promote thickening. Your body does not produce these fatty acids on its own, hence, it is important to add foods rich in healthy fats. Nuts like almonds and walnuts are great and seeds like flaxseeds can be included in your diet.

4. Carrots

Vitamin A present in carrots helps quick hair growth. It also helps the scalp in producing the natural sebum oil which keeps the roots healthy and boosts hair growth
