Ghaziabad : A burglar was shot dead by the owner of a shop he had gone to rob in the wee hours in Ghaziabad on Saturday. The shop owner is a retired armyman.
Police said that around 3.30 a.m., Pooran Chand heard a noise in his hardware shop, which he ran from his house. When he called out, the burglars fired at him.
Chand, a retired armyman, fired back with his .12 bore rifle. As the robbers were fleeing, they were caught by residents who had woken up by the gunshots.
One of the burglars, who was injured in the firing, was beaten to death by residents. His three accomplices escaped in the melee.
The incident occurred in Siddharth Vihar on National Highway 24, police said.
