Why Goan Catholics are portrayedas drunkards, asks filmmaker Panaji, Dec 1, Goa-based filmmaker Rajendra Talak ruesthat portrayal of Catholics from the state as 'boozers' in Hindi films paintGoans in bad light on screen.
"Why Pedro has to be adrunkard always? And why that Pedro has to be Goan Pedro only? Aren't therePedros in other states too?" questioned Talak, whose movie 'O Maria' was premieredat International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2010
on Tuesday.
Briefing the press on thesidelines of IFFI, Talak said that his latest movie clarifies this absolutelywrong thinking propagated through films about Catholics in Goa.
"Hindi films are showing acharacter (Pedro) in the movie as a boozer and through that they are labelingall the Goans as drunkards. This is wrong," the filmmaker quipped.
Talak's movie has America-bornactor Cory Goldberg and actors from Indian film industry Shernaz Patel, SulabhaArya and Tiku Talsania enacting the script that depicts the current grimreality of Goa.
"Everyone amongst us shouldbe blamed for what's happening in Goa. We are losing our resources like landand there are other evils like intense drug peddling. This is due to the greedof few local individuals," the filmmaker said.
Talak said that he will be havingspecial screening of this film for politicians, bureaucrats and even Archbishopof Goa.
"I don't know whether theChief Minister saw the film when it was premiered on Tuesday. I want to createawareness about saving Goa through this film," he said, adding that we havenot lost everything and there is still scope to save the
state.
