Panaji: Goa will investigate the allegation that one of the state's top police officers Sunil Garg accepted a bribe of 5.5 lakh rupees, part of it at the police headquarters, chief minister Laxmikant Parsekar said in the assembly today amid demands from the opposition that the officer be suspended.
Mr Parsekar said that an independent inquiry will be initiated into the charges against Mr Garg, since the police force he heads cannot be asked to investigate him.
Inspector General of Police Garg has been accused by a Vasco-based businessman of taking bribe last year to register a police case or FIR in a cheating case.
The businessman Munnalal Halwai alleges that he negotiated the bribe down to 5.5 lakh from the 11.5 lakh sought and that he paid in two installments, one of them at the police headquarters in state capital Panaji.
Mr Halwai has filed a formal complaint against the IGP with the Chief Minister and the Anti-Corruption Bureau. He also moved a petition in a special court and submitted an audio recording as evidence.
Sunil Garg, a high-profile officer who has been part of several important police operations, has denied the allegation, though he admits to having met Mr Halwai.
"I did meet Halwai but I have not accepted any bribe and I have not done anything wrong," Mr Garg told reporters earlier in the week.
