Gurgaon: A man snatched a bag containing Rs 1.87 lakh in high-value currency from a woman outside a crowded bank on Thursday and managed to flee, police said.

Nirmla Devi, 45, a local resident, had gone to deposit cash in Punjab National Bank near Gurgaon's main bus stand on Thursday afternoon when a young man snatched the bag and ran away.

"Though there was a large crowd inside and outside the bank, no one came forward to help her," Bijender Singh, Chief of Civil Lines Police Station, told IANS.

"We have deployed police there but they were busy in controlling the crowd inside the bank. We have started investigation," Mr Singh added.

The place where the incident occurred is close to Police Lines and is one of the busiest and crowed areas of Gurgaon.

"There was a long queue of people outside the bank to deposit or exchange their demonetised currency or take out cash but no one wanted to lose his place in the waiting line," said an eyewitness.
