Gurgaon: More than 48 hours after she fell into a 70-feet borewell on her birthday, the fate of the five-year-old girl Mahi still remains uncertain, as rescue operation in Manesar hits a roadblock again late on Friday night. After working for two consecutive days to dig a tunnel to reach the exact location where the child is stuck, the rescue team had to stop work after they faced a rock that stands between them and Mahi.
A team of doctors are on standby to rush her to a nearby hospital when she is rescued. Four ambulances - one each from the Army, Vedanta hospital, NRHM and the district hospital - are also kept on standby.
On Thursday, a camera was inserted into the tunnel, which detected the hand of the girl, but it did not register any movement. However the status of her physical condition is still not clear.
More than 100 officials, mostly from the Army, have drilled a pit parallel to the borewell into which she fell on June 20, while playing in her village, Kho.
The work to rescue the child has been constantly hampered by the presence of hard rocks which have come in the way of the link to be established between the borewell and a parallel pit dug up in order to reach her, rescue officials said.
A team of nine jawans, who are part of 3 Engineers Regiment from the Delhi Cantonment, are trying to dig a link from the pit to the borewell, to reach to the exact location where the child is stuck. They are not using any heavy machine to dig the link, so that the earth doesn't collapse. Each of them is repeating the process by turn because the process of digging the tunnel to the child is a strenuous and difficult one. One of the jawans fainted while trying to dig the link on Friday.
Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda said "whosoever is responsible for the carelessness (for not covering the borewell), a case is being made against him".
