Gurgaon:
Gurgaon resident Kshama Chopra was returning after a routine medical check-up along with her husband and parents on Saturday when the Tata Indigo they were travelling in was hit by a speeding BMW. The collision was so intense that the Indigo was thrown into the air. It turned several times over before crashing on the ground. Kshama, who was pregnant, and the driver of her car died on the spot. Her husband is still in the ICU with multiple fractures. Her father suffered a broken backbone; her mother too is battling for her life in hospital. But almost a week after the accident, the police are yet to make any arrests in the case.
The BMW was racing at 100 kms per hour. It allegedly belongs to a property dealer in Gurgaon. The police originally said that his son, a college student who was also seriously injured in the accident, was driving the car. However, the property dealer later said his driver, who is now missing, was at the wheel.
The police are yet to record the testimony of eye-witnesses and interview the other passengers in the BMW. So far, they haven't even questioned the BMW owner.
Outraged over the alleged police inaction, Kshama's family and friends have set up a signature campaign demanding justice for her. A petition on website www.thepetition.com asks for people to sign up and demand urgent action and investigation in the case. Over 4,500 people have already signed the petition.
The page,
Justice to Kshama Chopra, has been set up by Kshama's childhood friend Arpan Das. "Our friend departed so early with no fault of hers but of others. The driver of BMW was intoxicated at the time of driving (as per reports). The rich brat driver escaped from the site safely. No one dared to catch hold of him. The police has not yet arrested the culprit driver," it reads.
Police officers, however, have denied allegations of negligence or a cover-up. They say progress in the case will be shared soon. "Investigation is going on. We have deployed a special team to work on the case. We are waiting for the BMW owner's son to regain consciousness to get more details," said Maheshwar Dayal, Deputy Commissioner of Police, East Gurgaon.
