Killer husband arrested in Gurgaon

Gurgaon: A 25-year-old youth hailing from Jharkhand was arrested from  Gurgaon for alleged murder of his wife for dowry, police said here on Tuesday.

Subhash Kumar was apprehended from Gurgaon on Monday when he visited a friend to fund his escape to Nepal, DCP (South) Chhaya Sharma said.

Kumar worked as a supervisor in a Gurgaon based construction company. He allegedly murdered his wife Mumpy on April 23 at their rented accommodation at Malviya Nagar following an argument over dowry and fled.

"The couple had started living there for 10 days before the incident. The owner provided police with a tenant verification form filled by Kumar. This form was yet to be deposited with the local police for verification.

"Using the information provided in the form, parents of the deceased were contacted. Mumpy's parents told the police that the couple got married three years ago without their approval," Sharma said.

During investigation, she said, it was learnt that Kumar had left for a Naxalite area in Bihar. A team was dispatched to the state and intensive search was carried out to locate the accused in the Naxalite terrain of the Bihar-Bengal Border.

"But somehow, he sensed police presence and managed to flee. The team also kept on chasing him in Bokaro in Jharkhand. In view of continuous chase by police, he got frustrated and planned to escape to Nepal but he did not have sufficient money.

"So he visited his friend at Sona Road, Gurgoan for financial help but was nabbed by police," Sharma said.

During interrogation, she said, he came in contact with Mumpy's father Didar Mandal and started visiting his house in Chirag Delhi where he met her. He became familiar with Mumpy
and concluded that financial position of the girl was better than his.

"He planned to marry Mumpy so that his economic condition could improve but her family was against the marriage as they were not sure about Subhash. Later, Kumar convinced Mumpy and finally he married her against the wishes of her family," she said.

"Soon after the marriage, he started harassing Mumpy and her family members for not giving him dowry and when his demands were not fulfilled, he started assaulting his wife," Sharma said.

On the fateful day, she said, a quarrel ensued between the couple over the issue of paying rent. "Kumar strangulated Mumpy and left the house with all his belongings," she added.
