Gurgaon: Bringing respite to residents of National Capital Region, the weather department today said rainfall would be moderate till Sunday.
However, rains that brought Gurgaon to a halt on Thursday was moderate too, even though it rained five times above normal. Usually, 10 mm of rainfall is recorded in a day during monsoons.
Daily life came to a grinding halt in the face of rough weather and heavy rainfall in parts of Delhi and Gurgaon on Thursday. Traffic jams continued all day, bringing life to a standstill. Commuters were stuck in knee-deep water for hours, without fuel or even drinking water to their rescue.
Schools were also ordered to be shut down for two days and prohibitory orders were imposed near Hero Honda Chowk in a bid to ease the congestion caused by massive traffic jams.
Union transport minister Nitin Gadkari intervened and ordered National Highways chief Raghav Chandra to send a team of officials to clear the traffic and submit a report to him.
However, heavy rain is expected over Delhi and Haryana by Tuesday.
Residents have been warned not to travel to areas of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand where a red alert warning has been sounded.
