Guwahati:
A couple was killed and their minor daughter injured as a herd of about 30 elephants strayed into a tea estate in Assam's Nagaon district, police said on Monday.
The trampling took place at Amlakhi Bagan tea estate in Kaliabor area in Nagaon district, police said.
L Lakra and his wife Rumi Lakra were killed and the couple's daughter Ruprekha Lakra was injured when the herd of elephant entered the area and attacked the family's house. The girl is undergoing treatment at a hospital in Kaliabor.
"According to the local people, a herd of about 30 elephants entered the area and started attacking houses. The couple were killed as the elephant herd attacked their house while their minor girl received serious injuries," police said.
The human-elephant conflict is very common in parts of Nagaon district of Assam. About 400 people are killed in such conflicts every year in India and in retaliation on an average 100 elephants are killed.
